Reminders for Parents Whose Teens are Traveling

It is logical and common for parents to feel worried and hesitant if someone is leaving, especially, children.  It is more worrisome if their teens are going to travel abroad to either study or spend summer vacation. Parents feel excited and proud of their children, but with the proper preparation and precautions, your  teens will surely have an amazing adventure.

Prepare necessary documents ahead of time.  See to it that your teen's passport and other related documents are ready and are up to date.  Keep a record for future purposes by having a photocopy of your own.  Remind your teen the importance of keeping them safe.

Research about the health and medical condition. Make sure that you check and confirmed the current medical concerns of your teen's destination country.  Ask your teen's physician if there is any vaccination that is needed.  If there is an outbreak, make sure your teen is well oriented about emergency situations.

Be truthful.  There are a lot of forms and make sure that you fill them up as truthfully as you can.  If your teen is undergoing a medication or is having a disease or emotional issues, indicate when needed.  Refusing to provide this information can bring your teen at risk.

Pack the necessary. If you are provided with a list of the things to pack, make sure to include everything on the list.  Your teen may resist and complain, but insist. Remind your teen that he needs to be responsible with all his belongings.

Orient your teen about the rules.  Whether your teen is travelling to study or for pleasure, he must be aware about the basic rules and regulations. You should discuss about alcoholic drinks, cigarettes, drugs and even sex.  He should know that failure to so may lead to trouble or  punishment.

Stay connected.  Make your teen realize the importance of communication. While he is away, staying in touch can ease the worries and anxiety. In your end, do not expect to receive a message a phone call during the busy hours.  Let your teen set the time  depending on his availability and remind him that he should stick to it.
